Water Well for Uganda

Dear Families:

Tomorrow we are going ahead with our one day blitz to raise funds for the construction of a Water Well in Uganda. Jill Gilday’s aim is to raise $1.00 per student. We have a jar already set up in the office to collect the funds and tomorrow Jill will be by to count it with a few students.

Jill will be making herself available to speak with the classes at the teacher request. Jill has already made a presentation to the Grade 4 class, a story which will appear soon in the Yellowknifer.

There are many things that make me very proud of our older students. For instance, recently the Grade 4 and 5 students won the City’s Recycling Award. Another thing that has made me proud is that back in the fall, several Grade 5 students spoke to teacher Brigitte Rivet about Subway Lunches. Every second week this year students, with their teacher, would carry out ordering student lunches. The profit of $150 -$ 200 would go to the classroom special activity fund (usually year end excursions). This year, at the Grade 5 insistence, we have kept three subway lunches open just to fundraise for special charities or world needs, such as the recent Haiti earthquake. Jacqueline’s Kindergarten class, with the help of several Grade 5 students, will host the next Subway lunch to raise further funds to go towards building this well. Although the total cost of the well is $15,000, our school is first school Jill has contacted with the hope that together we could spread the word about this project. The Yellowknifer, CJCD, and CBC’s Trailblazer are partners in spreading this message, but the effort comes from Jill the children’s passion.

Thank you,
Paul Bennett
